....Neosho Christmas Parade Route.........

I have long been an advocate of changing the Christmas Parade in Neosho to being on Neosho Boulevard.  I would love to see it done just once, so everyone could experience it.  Start with the line up at US 60 and then have the parade actually begin on the curve just South of Daughtery Road.  Then go North to Harmony Street.

I would love to see a nice reviewing stand set up along the Boulevard, maybe in front of the High School, so Bands could be Judged.  If Sponsors were obtained and large cash prizes were offered, I think we could get more Bands to come.  Like come on, only Bands from our very immediate area participate.  Change can be a good thing.....just give it a try one time.....I will find the Sponsors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Panel approves Dickens Faire parade route

When Santa makes his annual pre-Christmas visit to Neosho this year, which way he will take in the city’s evening parade isn’t something he’ll have to wonder about.

On Wednesday the Neosho Traffic Commission approved the parade route for this year’s Dickens Faire, to be held on Saturday, Dec. 4. Line up will be at 3:30 p.m. with the parade to start at 5 p.m.

It will go from Brook Street, then south on College Street, east on Spring Street to the Square, south on Wood Street, east on Hickory Street, north on Washington Street and finish at the corner of Washington and Brook Street.

The commission also agreed to close off the Square and Main Street in front of the Civic at 8 a.m. Dec. 4 for the all-day Dickens Faire, which will be held in and around the Civic, with carriage rides around the Square.

Neosho police chief Dave McCracken said Wednesday that extra barricades would be needed this year because he doesn’t have the manpower anymore for traffic and crowd control.

Shana Griffin, executive director of the Neosho Area Chamber of Commerce, said that Crowder College students are helping this year with the Faire, and on the parade sidelines, and might also be able assist with making sure barricades are in place.

“Whatever help we can get, we appreciate it,” McCracken said.

Also on Wednesday the commission heard an update on a proposal to widen the vehicle entryway into the parking lot of the handicapped fishing dock at Morse Park North.

Just off Business Highway 60, the access to the parking lot for the fishing area is about 10 feet wide. There is also a significant drop from the highway to the curb.

Last month, Neosho parks and recreation board chairman Scott Swope asked the commission to see what could be done about it. At that time, Neosho public works director Mike Hightower and city fire chief Mike Eads had said they would inquire with the Missouri Department of Transportation and the Missouri Conservation Department respectively to see if any funding might be available for the project.

On Wednesday, Hightower said MoDOT has given the OK for the work to proceed but does not have any funds for the job. Eads said he struck out with the Conservation Department as well.

Hightower said that the project would be on the city’s future to-do list but he didn’t know when it would happen.

In other business Wednesday the commission:

• Approved a request for one streetlight on the corner of North Meadows and Lusk Drive as submitted by Sharon Meredith. The request only specified for North Meadows but the commission wanted the streetlight placed at an intersection. A recommendation will now be forwarded to the Neosho City Council.

• Tabled a request for two streetlights at both ends of Sylvan Avenue, as submitted by Allen Taylor, pending further information.

  1. If you use the Blvd. send the bands to the football field to be judged. They could start in the baseball field and march into the football field.
