Chris Meek, Baxter Springs defense attorney, charged in federal court
BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. — Baxter Springs defense attorney Chris Meek was charged Wednesday in U.S. District Court, Wichita, with felony drug crimes.A federal grand jury handed down the indictment Wednesday charging Meek with aiding and abetting the manufacture of marijuana and maintaining a premises for the purpose of manufacturing marijuana, both on March 14, 2006, and possession of prescription painkiller Hydrocodone on Sept. 1, 2009.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Lanny Welch is prosecuting the case against Meek.

If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000 on the charge of aiding and abetting the manufacture of marijuana; up to 20 years and a fine of up to $500,000 on the charge of maintaining a premises to manufacture drugs; and up to a year in prison and up to $1,000 fine on the Hydrocodone charge.
Meek, reached by cell phone, said he was unaware of the indictment. He said he would have no comment until he talked with his attorney.
Meek also is a former Cherokee County Attorney, the county prosecutor.
